"Little Switzerland" Tour
This trip explores the more remote eastern Oregon and the
Blue mountain. The primary destination of this tour is Wallowa
Lake and the town of Joseph, Oregon (named for Indian Chief
Joseph). Wallowa Lake is one of Oregon's deepest and clearest
lakes. The lake is a perfect example of a moraine, a lake
formed by the melting of a glacier. From the town of Joseph
you can see the wall of the lake as the glacier traveled
out into the valley. The town is well-known for its artists
and many bronze founders.
The return route on this tour takes you near Snake River
and the overlook at Hells Canyon, the deepest canyon in
Oregon. A stop at the Oregon Interpretive Center near Baker
City reminds us of the early travelers to our state that
came by way of covered wagons. This tour offers campers
a ton of hiking opportunities, as well as fishing spots
and jet boat rides. (See map below.) |
